The Dead I Know is a realistic fiction novel written by Scot Gardner. It tells a story from the perspective of Aaron Rowe, a teenager who dropped out of school to find himself at a new job; training to be a funeral director. I think the point of view has a very important role in the story for many reasons. Aaron has recurring nightmares that are vividly described, and these nightmares are a major plot line. Aaron is also very quiet and reserved, so knowing what he is thinking throughout the book is essential to understanding the storyline.
Literature frequently explores themes of betrayal. By depicting Santiago Nasar’s death in his book “Chronicle of a Death Foretold,” Gabriel Garcia Marquez paints a moving image of betrayal. By making the setting of Chronicle of a Death Foretold, published in 1981 by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, as a small, quant town, Marquez allows the normality of city life to be slightly bended. Even given the year of the occurrence of the murder, most places would have a stricter surveillance on people planning to murder others and possessions of items lethal weapons. However, due to their everyday activities, the townspeople often and blatantly engage in violence without thinking twice about it. This is shown by the treatment of animals both rabid and domestic, and the entirety of Santiago’s murder.
If a woman is not a virgin until marriage, no is going to marry her and no one will want to or be allowed to marry her. Once a woman loses her virginity before she gets married and it is found out, her family loses their honor and are outcast. On the other hand, due to the idea of machismo, the men in society feel they need to show their strength and are allowed to not remain virgins until marriage and can sleep with whoever they want without any word to them or their family. Angela Vicario was not a virgin when she married Bayardo San Roman and the only people she told were two women who worked with her. When discussing Angela's virginity with the women the narrator states, "...they taught her old wives' tricks to feign her lost possession" (38).
Neal Shusterman once said "Death must exist for life to have meaning." And although some may strongly disagree with this and see death as the exact opposite, I agree with Shusterman. Death plays a large part in someone's life, causing depression and grief. This could change a person tremendously by adapting to life without that loved one and becoming more independent. In this way, death can be positive.

Throughout the novella ”A Chronicle of a Death Foretold”, it becomes evident that the setting plays an important role in the development of the plot, story, and characters. However, the heavy influence of the book’s location on the plot is not as easily seen without intense study on the subject and evidence drawn from the book. Therefore, after the presentation, it became more clear to me how the historical context of the novella affected the path of the story and the actions of the characters. For example, the presentation group highlighted the importance of the Catholic religion throughout the novel.
Clare Wald is an accomplished South African novelist who has been through many challenges in her lifetime and has made many mistakes which she regrets. Because of this she is tormented by grief, guilt and emotional pain and has a deep need for absolution from the people who she feels she has wronged. These people include her son, her sister, her daughter, and Sam and although she realizes she will not have the chance to ask them all directly for forgiveness we still see her persist in her attempts, this shows us how desperate she is. By confessing to what she has done wrong and showing deep remorse for her actions, Clare hopes that she can start to feel healed and mend her somewhat ‘haunted’ conscience.
There are many examples in the short story “The Dead” written by James Joyce, that correlate with the 1800’s in Europe. Several of these examples are about the transportation used in Europe during the 1800’s. For example, while getting ready to leave Misses Morkan’s annual dance, Mr. Browne says, “I’d like nothing better this minute … than a rattling fine walk in the country or a fast drive with a good spanking goer between the shafts.” Mr. Browne’s statement mentions the use of a horse and buggy as a means of transportation which suggests that this story took place around the 1800’s when the horse and buggy was the main form of transportation. “The Dead” is a short story composed by James Joyce. Throughout the story he depicts the deep, internal emotions of Gabriel. In addition, he relates the events that are mentioned about the past and the future. This way, he provides an image that allows for those who read the story to view the grief of the defeated through the eyes of an angel. One can observe from the short story that it is written in third person point of view in order to provide an omniscient voice that can recount the stories coming from the thoughts of Gabriel.
“The Dead” is an intricate work packed full of seemingly random details. However extraneous these details may seem, most are connected meaningfully to numerous plot points within the story. To the distracted eye this text appears to be an emotionally charged turning point in a husband and wife’s relationship overshadowing an anticlimactic dinner party. Nevertheless, the elements that are most critical in the understanding of “The Dead” lie within the casually but frequently mentioned details and images Joyce took into consideration for the creation of the dinner party. Images that Joyce purposefully includes are pictures, whether that be photographs, paintings, or mere visualizations.
