The American cinema gives imagery to the Mafia, which many Americans are not typically familiar with in their daily lives. I choose to write a paper on Cinema and Mafia over the Sacco and Vanzetti trial, because the topic of how Italians have been portrayed in film and television has been a conversation in my family for many years. When the advertisement for the television show Sopranos broadcasted, my father was excited, he thought the show was going to be about the opera, must to his disappointment, once he realized it was about the Mafia he could not understand why people like to view such an unglorified topic, (Salvatore Sorrentino), the show was a hit, I have to admit I did watch it. One of the most famous is the original Godfather in 1972, along with the sequels. The list of movies, consist of Goodfellas, Casino, A Bronx Tale, Massacre Mafia Style, Palermo Connection. There are movies inspired by true stories such as The Sicilian Girl, the film was based on a young girl named Rita Atria, there are also mafia comedies, like Jonny Stecchino, Analyze This, Married to the Mob and The Family. There are even children animated cartoon, movies for example, “Shark Tale” which illustrate Mob like behavior. Although many of the movies are fictional writing, like the crime novel, “The Godfather”, written by Mario Puzo, some of the content was being based on mafia actualities. The book named “The Mammoth Book of The Mafia” describes a firsthand account of life inside the mob. This book gives you a background of how the mafia began and is edited by Nigel Cawthorne and Colin Cawthorne, the mob stories are from various Mafiosi men. Books such as “The Mafia” by Puzo and “Scarface” written by Armitage Trail, have been translated into film throughout many years. The body language, tone and physical appearance, makes an impact to the audience, leaving an impression of a cold blooded individual. Depending on the film, personality can vary, in some films there are characters such as Michael Coleone played by Al Pacino in the Godfather, a quiet and unassuming personality, whereas the character of Tony Soprano, played by the late actor James Gandolfini was a showy and boisterous, however both represented ruthless killers.
