November holds National Homeless and Hunger Awareness weeks, and the Center for Civic Engagement is offering UNL students a way to participate with its annual Dare to Care food drive.
The campus-wide competitive food drive challenges groups to collect as many non-perishable food items as they can. All proceeds will be donated in an effort to provide a Thanksgiving meal to those in need.
Brita Sjogren, a student volunteer at the Center for Civic Engagement, said that this year, they’re donating to two causes.
"We are planning this year on not taking our donations only to the Lincoln Food Bank, but also having them profit our open shelf pantry, which is on UNL's campus,” she said. “That's a pretty good motivator for UNL students to donate because

Barrels will be placed at the Nebraska Union, Henzlik Hall, Oldfather, the Nebraska East Union, and at the Plant Sciences building.
Sjorgren said that this year, the Center for Civic Engagement has a goal to collect 2,000 lbs of food.
Groups or individuals must register online at http://engage.unl.edu/start-here-start-now-welcome by November 2, and can pick up their packet to begin from the Center of Civic Engagement in room 222 of the Nebraska Union.
All competing groups will be invited to the twelfth annual East Campus Chili Cook-Off. This will be the second year Dare to Care is combined with the cook-off, something Sjogren said benefits both causes.
“We're able to recognize the winning team during that event and get some more facts on hunger at the tables and things like that,” she said. “We just decided why not pair these two things that have to do with hunger awareness and make them this one week-long focus."
The twelfth annual Chili Cook-Off will take place on November 6 at 6:30 in the Nebraska East Union’s Great Plains Room. The event’s open to students, faculty, and staff of UNL, along with members of the
