The struggle for civil liberties and civil rights has been an important issue testing the United States for hundreds of years. While democracy has proven to be the best way to govern, it still has its issues. Government officials find themselves above the law, corrupt in taking bribes and other illegal activities. Seeing officials that the people elected not caring for solving any issues, only helping themselves, is disgraceful and frustrating in our government today. While it seems that some of these people in office lose their jobs and prohibited from running again, others get away unscathed for decades even. Others still ending up being millionaires, even after getting caught. According to Steven Greenhut “Government workers have turned themselves into a coddled class that lives better than their private-sector counterparts and is exempt from many of the standards and laws that apply to the rest of us.” He urges the public to “question” what this tells us about our society. Greenhut explains that in California, those with a government rank get away with speeding, driving while intoxicated, and do pretty much anything that an ordinary citizen would be ticketed and possibly thrown in jail for. Freedom of speech lets me speak my mind and share my opinions with other people, even when they are not a popular belief. These liberties protect my political views. When I'm talking about politics, and I have a conservative point of view that's not shared by the majority of my friends, I'm not in trouble or at risk of being thrown in jail for thinking differently. It is because of the first amendment I can worship and be a Christian. I also know people who are Jewish, Muslim, and even atheist, and they can all believe in what they want without consequences. The first amendment allows me to celebrate Christmas and Hanukkah because my Mom is Christian and my Dad is Jewish. Civil liberties give me these rights of speech and religion that have an impact on my life every day.
