I think the nonviolence used by civil rights activists was a good tactic because it demonstrated how powerful African Americans were because they knew that violence was not the answer. The Montgomery Bus Boycott proved how Africans Americans used their actions in a peaceful way rather than in a violent way. The Sit ins allowed for people to see how Africans Americans were treated with the help of having television coverage in order for African Americans to gain sympathy. The most important thing it showed was how united Africans Americans were and more African Americans began to join the movement. 2. The difference was the SNCC student protestors stepped up to businesses that had segregational ways while the boycotters in Montgomery chose to boycott by refusing. Another thing was the SNCC protestor’s tactics during the sit ins allowed for people to see how crucial white people would treat African Americans. While the boycotters in Montgomery did not gain as much sympathy and people just wanted them to get off the bus. 3. Assumptions and beliefs I think guided the fierce opposition to the civil rights movement in the South was that white Americans felt threatened of African Americans. Governor Ross Barnett stating “I can call on every Mississippian to keep his faith and courage” shows how he thinks African Americans could be somewhat dangerous. Another belief was that white Americans do not like change and feel that Africans Americans will take away opportunities from them.
