Equality. Many people take it for granted; however, you would be lost without it. We must remember and honor the justice our ancestors fought so diligently for. Memorials are structures that allow us to accomplish this. They are extremely important to our society since they show achievement, teach us about history, allow us to remember it, and inspire individuals. For my memorial, I decided to honor the civil rights movements. These events are extremely important to our countries history. After the civil war, countless people believed there would be equality. However, nothing had changed. While slaves had been freed, the prejudice they faced every day had never dissolved. Since segregation was legal in the South, everything was separated. Although, the facilities given to minorities were never fair. They had run-down or broken amenities. After years of having to live with this, people finally stood up for themselves. This shows that if we stand together we can create a difference. For my memorial, I would like to reflect these same ideas. This memorial will impel you to feel proud to have lived in a country that was home to a multitude amazing people. It will be located next to the Lincoln Memorial, where Martin Luther King Jr. gave the I Have a Dream speech. I chose this area considering this speech was extremely important and caused the federal government to make a change. When you walk across the stone path, you will notice the flowers crawling along the garden floor emanating growth. In the garden, there will be influential figures from the civil rights movement built of rose quartz. This stone spreads unconditional love, hope, and forgiveness. During the civil rights movement, people used a great deal of these qualities to fight hate with love. Martin Luther King Jr. will be standing on a pedestal before the other statues as if he were giving his speech again. He will be made of moss agate since he was able to change our world and create new beginnings for us. Our country has learned and grown so much from our past
