Martin Luther King and Malcolm X both were heroes of the civil rights movement. They both contributed heavily to the equality movement for oppressed people living in The United States of America. However, both of these men had different viewpoints and beliefs in their solutions to end injustice. In this essay, we will compare and contrast the viewpoints of both MLK and Malcolm X and also why Malcolm X believed that MLK’s solution was impractical. Martin Luther King Jr.'s belief was that all people are created equal and should have the same rights. He believed that change could only come through peaceful and non-violent means. He also believed that change could only come through the empowerment of the people. This statement is hammered down by the 9th paragraph of his speech, in which he states “We cannot walk alone.”. His solution to end injustice was through the use of non-violent protests, civil disobedience, and education. He believed that if the people were educated about the issues and the injustices that were happening, they would be more willing to stand up and fight for change. He advocated for self-reliance and self-defense among black Americans and criticized mainstream African American organizations for not doing enough to help their members. This is evidenced by his saying in the 8th paragraph of Malcolm X’s In Support of Violence “The next scene was the “big six” civil rights Negro “leaders” meeting in New York City with the white head of a big philanthropic agency. They were told that their money-wrangling in public was damaging their image. And a reported 800,000$ was donated to a United Civil Rights Leadership council that was quickly organized by the “big six”.“.
