It was where a very important battle took place for Texans to fight for independence from Mexico. The war ended in 1836 when Mexican General Santa Anna was defeated by a small group of Texans. The United States was justified in going to war with Mexico because Manifest Destiny, too much Mexican interference, and Texas was invaded. One reason the Mexican War was justified was Manifest Destiny. In Document A, John O’Sullivan writes: “Texas is now ours...Let their reception into the “family be frank, kindly, and cheerful….”

The Comanche and the Texans had very different views on culture, relationships with other tribes and settlers, and ways of life, which resulted in many difficulties establishing peace between the two, eventually leading to war.

The Texas militia just lost the Battle of the Alamo, which happened from 23 February to 6 March 1836. After this battle, with only a few men to spare, General Sam Houston decided to retreat and replenish his Soldiers.

When Stephen F. Austin was jailed, the Texans revolted, so Santa Anna sent 6,000 more troops to Texas to put down the revolt. 3 The first battle between the Texans and the Mexicans took place at an old mission that was used as a fort known as The Alamo. On February 23rd, Alamo defenders were shocked to see the beginning of the Mexican force arriving in San Antonio, so the Texans barely made it into the Alamo before the Mexican Cavalry arrived to the city.
Soon enough, Texas wanted to become its own state. This would lead to various revolutions and battles, including the Texas Revolution. At the Alamo and Goliad alike, Texans and Mexicans were both killed. No matter how many people died, it wouldn’t be enough until America got what it wanted. Eventually, Texas became its own state but was left impoverished.
