The Civil War is a major central event in America’s historical awareness. During the American Revolution years of 1776-1783, it ultimately created the United States, while the Civil War of 1861-1865 determined what kind of nation it would come to be. For most Americans the Civil War kindles imagery and stories of dramatic changes in African-American lives or north and south battle fields. Rarely do you ever hear the stories of individuals of spanish descent who participated in the war. Like all Americans, Hispanics from all over the world were deeply affected by the war. Many accusations of subversion and disloyalty were thrown around Hispanic countries since slavery been abolished. But in the United States, many Hispanics showed their allegiance and patriotism to their confederation through service. Each citizen contributed to their side through wartime efforts ranging from factory workers, farm workers, spies, or fighting for the armed forces. Those who joined militia units on the battle frontier often did so out of loyalty, beliefs, or plain fear of being sent out of the state away from their families. Almost three million soldiers fought during the civil war and ten thousand of those soldiers were Hispanics fighting in the army or navy (Civil War Soldiers). These patriots contributed and dedicated their life in many ways to the preservation of the Union and Confederacy during the Civil War by being the first men in and the last ones out. A prime example of someone demonstrating citizenship through service was a navy seaman by the name of John Ortega. According to the The American Mosaic, “Ortega served as seaman on board the U.S.S Saratoga by carrying out his duties courageously and conducting himself gallantly which later promoted him to acting master’s mate.” No matter their regional conditions or experience Hispanic soldiers did not hesitate to defend their family and country’s honor through skillful
