The Civil War that happened in 1861 was a huge milestone in American history. We will discuss how the Civil War happened and how it impacted the citizens of the United States. Slavery existed before the Civil War. Slavery was the act of "owning" and treating colored people as property. They were employed to clean houses, farm (mostly cotton), and care for the master's children if they had any. Slavery was popular in the South (especially Virginia). After the Underground Railroad was created by Harriet Tubman that helped transport slaves to free states there was a law called the Fugitive Slave Act put into place that says all slaves even if they are on free land will be returned to their "masters" in the South. Following a warning to all colored people in Boston that there are Watchmen and Police Officers hired to be kidnappers and slave catchers. Because it is said that there will never be a compromise, the South stated that they did not want to abolish slavery because it greatly benefited them. As a result of the Dred Scott decision, the North was kicked out of the union. Another cause of the Civil War was the North's dislike of the South's power. Finally, Abraham Lincoln escalated the war because he was anti-slavery and the South despised the idea of having a President who opposed everything they "owned."
