One of the causes leading to the Civil War was Slavery in the United States of America which was without a doubt allowed in the South, although on the other hand forbidden in the North. Having slaves was a big issue between the North and South because the United States was said to be “free” and to have “freedom” but is against the idea of everybody being treated the same. According to Document K, a man named Charles Sumner was an abolitionist from the Northern state of Massachusetts. Alluding to Document C, Hinton Helper described the South being compelled to go to the North for belongings because they have fewer resources and the South don’t have as much as the North. The South didn’t have foreign trade, merchants, and artists which turned into not being able to give to literature and the arts. Hinton Helper moves on to state, “Whilst the free state retain not only the larger proportion born within their own limits, but induce, annually, hundreds of thousands of foreigners to settle and remain amongst them.” (Doc C). He had not only portrayed it as the North’s fault for moving to the west but pitied the South and made them seem as if they were the victims. Therefore the amount of land between the two directions would be more fair. On the other hand, the North saw it is being selfish and greedy and using that as an excuse just for expansion of slavery. They both have different viewpoints on whether slavery should be abolished, which split the line between the North and South coming together and in the course of time pushed the war to
