Recently class rank is really hot topic at every high school. Many students strive to be the number one student, but fail to understand what number one truly means. It’s as though they’re chasing a gold medal without an actual event in which to compete. The high school I attend is a nontraditional school. It was designed to be student-centered and educational driven school with a practical, applied curriculum that enhances career pathways. I knew I needed to attend this type of learning environment because of the rigorous classes and my dream of becoming an engineer. What about all the AP classes I took, the higher level math classes, and the demanding engineering classes? I did not want to leave my non-traditional school just to receive a higher ranking in my class. I strive to never accept limits and never to do something just to complete it. I wanted and needed a learning experience that continued to open my mind and challenge me intellectually. The mere fact that some students never try to challenge themselves just taking the “easy” classes so they can make straight A’s is dumbfounding to me. I thought high school was meant to prepare us for the challenges we face in the real world, not just college. But, more students are focusing on just getting by while padding their GPA. This eliminates the need for them to truly experience life and the vast challenges it will bring. It also places restrictions on their ability to seek things that make them uncomfortable and unfamiliar. Wondering why waste their time and money if colleges are only looking to accept the top 10 percent of students. On the other hand, it is disheartening to listen to fellow classmates explain why they didn’t take the rigorous classes that may drop their grades a point or two and causing them to fall out of that 10 percent range. Rigorous classes ensure adequate preparation for college success and the work force. I was really confused and didn’t want to have that defeated mentality that many of my classmates have seemed to adopt. There is more to life than being classified as top 10 percent student in school. It’s about pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone. I’ve strived to live life abundantly and challenge myself. I’ve never worried about failing because I know I can pick myself up and try it again. I’m a world class athlete, as well as a volunteer, a debater, a robotics team member, and have even participated in TED talk Jr. The limits of a class rank cannot dictate to me my worth academically or
