High school is one of the greatest pivotal times in a human's life. It is where young adults are able to form their own opinions on the world, find activities they are passionate about, and learn to create fruitful relationships with their peers and teachers. However, I did not initially view high school as a period of time for growth and development. Instead, I saw it simply as another task to complete before I entered the real world. I did not take advantage of all the opportunities around me and I began to find school to be institutionalized or meaningless. Each one of these pillars has made a difference in not only my school life but my extracurricular and community life as well. To begin, scholarship is something that I have always valued in my life. In elementary school, I loved learning and researching topics in both the classroom and in my personal. However, as I grew older I began to put my grades above everything else. Oftentimes, I would just do the assignments because I was told to, not truly grasping the importance of what I was learning. I realize now that I cared more about my GPA and scores than actually learning. Being a member of the National Honor Society has reignited my passion for education. Before joining the National Honor Society, I had very little experience volunteering. I stayed in my own bubble, not knowing the importance of helping my community. Despite my previous experiences, NHS has helped me realize that I enjoy volunteering and that it is a vital part of creating a successful community. Whether it be through volunteering in school or in York County, NHS has provided me with endless opportunities to meet new people and expand my worldview via volunteering. One of my favorite volunteer opportunities that I participated in was the York Area Down Syndrome Association Buddy Walk. This event was at the beginning of the year and was a fantastic way for me to become involved in a new activity which I will continue to attend and try to help out with for years to come. Volunteering my time to be able to make a day special for others was truly a memorable experience that I will carry with
