November 6, 2014 Midterm 2 Classical ideal is something that pertains the standard excellence proposed by ancient Athens from the beginning of the Golden Age that was around 490 B.EC. up till 399B.C.E. Ancient Greeks were inspired in perfection, both body and mind. They wanted to obtain perfection more than anything and treated perfection as if it was something that can be computed. We could say that we got the saying that “math is everywhere” from the Greeks are the first ones to see the world a systematic way where music and math was the key. We could see that music is mathematical where all of it is vibration. One kind of art they used was sculpture making. Mostly of the time they would use human bodies as the source material to create these stone figures. They wanted to show that the ones that they idolize had the perfect body that civilization wanted to achieve. Knowing that they had gods and goddess that had this perfection, there were also mortals that obtain this perfection. In sculpturing, the inspirations were mostly nude males as the characteristic form of a perfect human body. The artist would want to capture that perfection. An example was the Riace Warrior of 470 B.C.E. This sculpture was given to Delphi with a full size of six foot and eight inches tall. The sculpture was made from bronze. Bronze was believed to be the main material of choice for Greek sculpting. This was because marble was difficult work with because of it can easily creating cracks and would be hard to fix during the sculpting process. In using bronze as the material in sculpturing, it would be like clay and redoing error part could be done over and over again. With this in hand, creating the perfect sculpture or almost perfect replica of the human body can be obtained better than stone figures (Sayre, H). The statue shows the contrapposto pose, where most of the body weight is shifted to one side of the body and one leg is in front of the other. This kind of post shows the naturalism of balancing on one supported leg. It is seen as a perfect copy of the human form and very realistic. They believe that sculpture represented the perfect human body. And with the reproduction of the human body, they tried to recreate perfection. They believe that copying is a major thing. What we take form this is Physical Education. This is where we take mental health and physical health as an inspired.
