Is Music Beneficial for Testing? You are sitting at your table listening to your favorite genre of music, working on Mrs. Compton’s essay that's due on Friday, when you realize you’re focusing on the words in the song more than the paper you have been assigned to write. You continue on writing individual sentences for longer than you should a for a single sentence, but the time being spent is too economically dissatisfying. You then remember your teacher speaking to you about how classical music can be helpful and more relaxing. So you decide to try it out and pick one of Mozart's Sonatas, and realize you're not only more focused but more relaxed. The exact mood of classical music may vary, but still relaxes the mind. Many people disagree, and might argue that any music or any song is a distraction, no matter what mood it puts you in, yet they forget that someone in a relaxed state of mind can function much better than someone who is more stressed. “Because music can impact and regulate your mood and the best mood to study in is a more relaxed mood, choosing music that helps you relax but also with enough beat or rhythm to ensure you don’t zone out while studying is crucial. But music that’s too loud or with too much of an upbeat tempo can also be distracting, so having a playlist or specific artist (or genre) you turn to for studying music can really help (Doraiswamy)”. The music could create a more heightened and interested emotion, and relaxation which can help them stay engaged. “Studies have shown that listening to music before studying or performing a task can be beneficial as it improves attention, memory, and even your ability to do mental math as well as helping lessen depression and anxiety” (Doraiswamy). I believe that the article was stating: these effects are the result of a more intuitive and interested mind (caused by classical music). There are several who may disagree with this statement, and can say the song itself is a distraction. This possibly could be true but, they often forget about the classical genre, which is purely acoustic, has a steady beat, and could be only a solo instrument playing. This keeps minimal distractions in the way of whoever should be working while still providing its benefits. According to Elana Goodwin, “If you’re really set on listening to music while studying but know your focus will probably end up divided, choose classical music or more acoustic music with minimal words to distract you. Movie scores, which typically consist of a bunch of orchestral pieces, may also be good background music for you to study to”. Listening to classical music will improve your interest in your assignment, test, or effort in
