A popular subject of debate is whether climate change, or global warming, truly exists. Despite the overwhelming evidence and facts provided by experts in the field, many still find it hard to believe. Every year becomes the newest hottest record on year, species become extinct because of polluted water, and wildfires become worse and worse every summer. Because climate change is still a heavily debated topic, it has led many to inaction on fighting the effects of climate change. The increasingly hot weather has gone up by one to two degrees in the past fifty years (Tigay, 2011). While the small number may not be alarming to most people, the one degree increase in temperature has had negative effects on the Earth and especially on low water supplies. In California, the recent droughts have not left enough water to go around to help with fires or for agricultural purposes. The state produces large amounts of agriculture, such as almonds and avocados, which in turn requires large amounts of water. Heat related illnesses are especially great in the elderly and in young children (Bedsworth, 2009). Those with respiratory and cardiovascular problems are also more susceptible to falling ill because of these illnesses. Air pollution is also a great contributor of climate change related deaths as it kills roughly 3.3 million people a year with 55,000 of those being American lives (Adams, 2015). Hotter temperatures are ideal for the growth of pathogens as they thrive in the heat and ideal for diseases to spread.
