Percussion instruments are used a lot in the field of music therapy. Percussion is used with four music therapy methods known as improvisation, receptive, compositional and re-creative. Researchers have stated that percussion instruments are often used during improvisation and re-creative. Each method will work for sets of populations. The article gives an example that for improvisation interventions, they have shown to improve communication with schizophrenia patients. Improvisation can help with improving expression, facilitate social interactions, awareness, memories and emotions. Each therapist was given a survey that they had 30 day to complete about academic percussion training, nonacademic percussion training, and use of percussion in clinical practice. The results stated that 611 surveys were returned. Academic percussion training results of participants was 70%. Nonacademic percussion training participants was 85%. Clinical practice participant was at 88%. Each percentage was of the participants that answered the survey on using percussion instruments in sessions. The results showed that schools need more percussion instrumental trainings and need to learn more about percussion. Further research is being done on this area to find more information.
Overall I liked this study. I thought it was an interesting read and pretty easy until the results. I felt the result were very confusing till I got to the conclusion. When I got to the conclusion it explained more about the results. I wish the article would talk more about percussion intervention then a survey about percussion. Rhythm state to be a part of body percussion. Rhythm is what helps keep a person in time, keeping them steady, and a good beat. In the BAPNE method rhythm is used as a guide through percussion. The study uses the example of hitting the body when using it as an instrument. Body percussion states the human body can use as an instrument. You can make different sounds when hitting different body parts. We can use our feet and hands to produce sound through body percussion. For the BAPNE method they use body percussion with sounds, using objects, someone else’s body, etc. For the last area contact and song as social interaction stated BAPNE method helps with social interactions and working with others. They used handclapping, movement and hand touching. The conclusion argues that this research has shown that body percussion can lead to improvement in the areas of physical, mental and socio-affective.
