Day of the Butterfly is a short story about young adolescents, in the manner of cliques being formed at a young age. These school kids and their human nature depict whether they are not popular or are popular in their peers' eyes. Their behaviour towards each other and others around them gives them the opportunity to look better than others and also fit into these cliques. With this short story, you can see how each of these characters resembles the cliques that society has in the schools. Each character in this story resembles a clique that society brings into school at a young age, which results in friendships being compromised by how they see each other. Jimmy Sayla would come to her class asking permission to get his sister to take him to the washroom. Myra had the lightest singsong voice, when asking to get permission to take her brother home to get cleaned. She was rigid towards others when they tried to talk to her, as she did not know what to expect. “Myra waited, but she did not look at me; she waited in the withdrawn and rigid attitude with which she always met us”. She did not know what to expect from others when they approached her as she became rigid and waiting for someone to throw something at her or even say hurtful things to her, which put her off guard when Helen approached. She was standoffish when it came to talking to another human being. Myra was the girl no one noticed until her brother came to school, she was the girl who was an outcast.
