In the book The Glass Castle, the setting is always changing which contributes to the development of the book and the development of the characters. The Glass Castle starts in the 1960's in southern Arizona. As the book continues on, the Walls' find themselves in Welch. When President John F. Kennedy is first elected into office, he himself goes to Welch to hand out the first food stamps. He wants to show the people of America that poverty and starvation exist in their own country (Walls 134).

The audience watches as the town starts to spiral into madness and the citizens start to blame and resent each other. The external struggle of the Vietnam War stirs conflict within Corrigan, particularly against Charlie’s Vietnamese neighbours, the Lu family.
In “Charles” foreshadowing convinces us that Laurie is Charles. An example of this is, When Laurie has to think before he tells his mom about his first day of kindergarten. A quote in the story to show this is when, Laurie’s mom states “Laurie thought. ‘It was Charles’... ”(11).This quote shows a little proof that Laurie is Charles, because he has to thinks for a second,since he has to think up a name that isn’t his own.
The Possibility of Evil Miss Strangeworth got what she deserved. She hurt the people that she sent the letters to. So the people got revenge but cutting down her precious roses. Miss Strangeworth seems to be a sweet innocent old lady that loves her roses but at night she went incognito to write and deliver hate letters to the people in town telling them different things that are very offending and causes a lot of controversy in the town. Miss Strangeworth family has lived on pleasant street for generation.
Charlie forms his values, attitudes and beliefs from these books and admires qualities of the characters in some. One character being Atticus Finch, when Charlie needs to make a decision about something he often refers back to Atticus and says, “What would Atticus Finch do?” With an insight of where Charlie gets his attitudes, values and beliefs from, we can understand why he behaves the way he does and why he is so smart and intelligent. The reader can understand why Charlie doesn’t bully Jeffrey and why he has respect for his family and doesn’t judge them. The reader can also see why Charlie and Jeffrey’s friendship works so well and why the respect each other.
Amidst the characterization, Irony and foreshadowing, and mood the theme is eminently evident. These literary elements show us the theme that in order to overcome your fears you have to face them and ‘leap’ over them. Firstly, through the characterization of the daughter and the mother, Anna Avalon, the theme is displayed fairly vividly. The lucidity of how these personalities are brought to life make complex concepts easier to grasp.

Charlie by, Lee Maracle is about a young Indian boy who goes to a catholic school. Charlie dreams about going outside and exploring but the school will punish him if he does. One a day a group of kids including Charlie sneak out to go to one of their families houses. When they get their Charlie leaves to go to his family’s cabin. Unfortunately his long journey is cut short by frost bite and he dies of hypothermia.
The character from the story Charles named Laurie ( protagonist ) seems like a sweet boy and a stereotypical boy who go to kindergarten and sing along to nursery rhymes , but due to kids today and the way things media gives them and the way they entertain has a big impact on the younger children to grow up faster .when the story starts to describe him things take a turn. He portrays many awful traits such as barbaric , secretive and self absorbed. First , Throughout the story Laurie shows disrespectful behaviors , this is shown when Laurie 's family sits down to eat lunch and Laurie 's says to his father " look up look down at my thumb gee you 're dumb" .
