To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is about seeing a corrupt world, full of judgement and racism, through innocent eyes. The theme of To Kill a Mockingbird is making assumptions about people could cloud your judgement. Harper Lee employs the usage of characters, conflict, and setting to show this theme.
Harper Lee employs the usage of characters like Jem, Scout, and Boo, to display the theme that assumption cloud your judgment. She does this by using the example of the rumors about the Radley’s, which Jem, Scout and Dill hear from Miss Stephanie Crawford which frighten them. For example, on page 17, Jem says, “I hope you’ve got it through your head that he’ll kill us each and every one, Dill Harris.” This relates to my theme because Jem assumes that Boo was dangerous before even knowing him, which clouded his judgement of Boo. …show more content…

Lee illustrates this theme by using the people in Maycomb. For instance, the way the town folks act towards Dolphus Raymond. The people in Maycomb assume that he is drunk because he lives among the blacks,and the fact that he carries a bottle of Co-Cola; but the townspeople think is liquor because he covers the bottle with a brown paper bag, and they judged him for doing this. As an illustration, on page 267 “As Mr. Doplhus Raymond was an evil man I accepted his invitation reluctantly, but I followed Dill.” In other words even though Scout did not know Mr. Raymond that well she just assume he was evil, but after getting to know she realize that he was a very sweet
