Recently I found an article, They do get prettier at closing time: A repeated measures study of the closing-time effect and alcohol, by Carly Johnco, Ladd Wheeler, and Alan Taylor. This study tested a phenomenon known as the closing time effect, where people become more attractive as the night progresses and gets nearer to closing time. Patrons in an Australian bar were asked whether or not they wanted to participate in the study and if they planned to stay in the bar until midnight. For those who agreed, release forms were signed and the experiment began. Participants completed a questionnaire that assessed demographic information (i.e., age, gender, and relationship status), drug use, and the attractiveness of other bar patrons from their preferred sex. Alcohol also affected attraction ratings, as the patrons were more attracted to the opposite sex as the patrons’ BAC increased. However, alcohol did not fully explain the closing time effect. Researchers differed on the cause of the closing time effect and thus came up with three hypotheses. The first hypothesis was the reactance theory with predicts scarcity effects only when an important freedom is threatened. The second hypothesis was the commodity theory where something that is rare, or scarce, is valuable. The third hypothesis was the mere exposure effect; when you’ve seen something previously, so you tend to think more positively about versus something you are seeing for the first time.
