My purpose of this essay is to share my thoughts about Mike Krzyzewski, better known as “Coach K” Army leadership, character, presence and direction provider. This essay will cover some of Coach K’s career achievements in his player’s life, respect, discipline and how they relate to him being a great leader, mentor, coach and teacher. However, I think there is another career that can exhibit this, a coach, leader, mentor and a person with the character to develop his subordinates. Coaches are some people that can have a lasting impact on individuals. They are respected individuals that can have a positive change in someone’s life. I believe a good coach doesn’t just care about their win percentage, but also cares about developing model citizens and thus exhibits some aspects of servant leadership. A coach that exemplifies this well is Duke University Basketball Coach Mike Krzyzewski. I believe he exemplifies a servant leader by being one to listen, talk and help his players to reach their goals, feeling empathy for them, showing commitment to growth of players as well as building a positive community. The leadership they gain through Coach K enables them to become and develop good leaders in other organizational settings outside of the team. This is one of the reasons Coach K is highly respected as he does not just develop basketball players but develops men and females in the civilian world. He cares about the development and growth of his players both on and off the field. Additionally, to develop young men to be better members of the community, he was very empathetic and resourceful for his team. Being far away from home, Mike Krzyzewski represents the role model to all his players. He listened to when they needed the opinion of someone and provided advice, presence and motivation as needed. He is a guide and role model for all of them to follow and lead. His leadership and personality allow him to bring motivation and positivism to the team or group that sets them up for success and reaching their goal.
