When presented with the question, “what is the difference between mentorship and coaching?” I immediately thought, “oh no.” I panicked; a million thoughts raced through my head. What was I going to write about? How was I going to start? What personal experience could I possibly include? I’ve never had a mentor or a coach. To ease my hysteria, I started searching for the answers to my questions. First, I did my research. I typed the words mentorship vs. coaching into my google search bar. I found that mentoring is “a power free, two-way mutually beneficial relationship. She explained how they helped her find a job, get into college and sort out personal problems she faced in high school. I asked another friend about his experience being coached on the job as a construction worker. He described the criticism he received from his foreman as being aggravating but helpful, constructive and something he needed to ultimately become better at his job. Through coaching, he acquired the skills necessary to complete his daily tasks. After conversing with my peers, I gained a better understanding of the differences between mentoring and coaching. I concluded that coaching is task orientated, more short-term than long, and performance driven. On the other hand, mentoring is relationship orientated, mostly long-term, and developmental driven. Both play an influential role in the development of a person’s personal and professional success. After gaining knowledge on the difference between coaching and mentoring, I am able to briefly brainstorm how to utilize each for the advancement of my career.
