The United States Coast Guard has begun to take steps to stop the criticism of the lack of minorities in their ranks. In terms of percentage the coast guard is made up of only 14.8 percent minorities, whereas they make up 31.2 percent of all other military services combined. Hiring practices in the United States is a hot topic and the Coast Guard wants to remove themselves from the topic. The Coast Guard plays an important role in our nations security by protecting our ports, maintaining maritime border security, and many other important issues. Our government and especially our law enforcement have been under a lot of scrutiny lately about mistreatment of minorities. It is important the Coast Guard makes sure there are no doubts about there hiring practices. …show more content…

This is important because this university is a historically black school. There will be more opportunities for the kids at this school to get involved in the Coast Guard. The school has said it will set up more “student opportunities” related to the Coast Guard. Coast Guard officials also plan to have a bigger presence at the university by attending graduations and other similar activities. The Coast Guard also admits advertising may be another reason minorities are under represented in their ranks. We have “Army Strong” and “The Few, the Proud, The Marines” commercials, but you never see anything about the Coast Guard. In the future the Coast Guard knows they need to increase their marketing and amp up their reinforcement
