2- What is the species of bacteria that Addy contracted while on ECMO? Stenotrophomonas a gram negative bacteria species contracted while she was on ECMO. They are usually found in hospitals like breathing
In the SIM Agar, the unknown microorganism was motile and produced Indole. Identification: Staphylococcus epidermis Justification: Staphylococcus epidermis is glucose fermenter. The unknown organism fermented glucose in the Phenol Red Glucose broth.
The Unknown Identification Lab was an experiment that provided the opportunity to apply all the tests that were learned in the semester of lab, to identify the two bacterias that remain unknown. Gram- staining and two other tests will be used to identify the unknowns. This experiment is crucial to the understanding of each test, and can benefit in the ability to identify the characteristics of specific bacteria. Having a clearer understanding of the bacteria can further the research of bacteria for medicine, such as antibiotics. The understanding can also help the development of research in the environment.
Coccidioidomycosis known as Valley Fever is an infection in your lungs, causing respiratory difficulties. It is a non-contagious infection. Valley Fever lives in soil, it can be spread into the air, most commonly found in people who are surrounded in construction or farming. It is found in part of the United States, California, Mexico and dry areas of the South and Central America. It is defined into two parts, parasitic life cycle when pre-existing fungal enlarge and transform into a sphere, then begin developing into endospores, and saprobic life cycle produces fungal infections, found in the environment.
Microbe: Are We Ready for the Next Plague? By: Alan P. Zelicoff and Michael Bellomo Microbe, by Alan P. Zelicoff and Michael Bellomo, describes the way our public health systems react to outbreaks of disease. It shows many different real life situations, including the 2003 SARS outbreak in China, and describes the way that national health organizations responded to the threats. Using the situations that occurred in the past, Microbe presents two different hypothetical outbreaks - a natural outbreak of bird flu in California, and a bioterrorism attack in Denver.
Streptococcus is often known as bacteria, that can affect a person’s throat. Often time’s people are unaware that this bacterium can also affect genital areas. Strep group B is commonly found in the vaginal, anal and rectal area of the body. This bacterium can affect 25 % of people, including pregnant women.
After experiment on microscope under oil immersion, I learned that my Unknown is gram positive. Under the lens, the bacteria appears in purple color. Its morphology is cocci arranged in cluster. However, during decolorizing process, I put too much alcohol to the crystal violet-iodine complex making the color overly removed. That led to the result of my gram positive has slightly redish
December 22, 2012 Dear Diary, I am your typical Streptococcus mutans. That name can be a little bit of a mouthful so I like to go by Carie. I am gram positive cocci and an anaerobe.
Background Legionella pneumophila acquired its fame through a 1976 American Legion conference for US military veterans, when many attendees came down with pneumonia (pneumophila = “lung-loving”). In nature, they are found in soil or as parasites of fresh-water amoebas. In fact, many of the virulent traits are results from their environment in nature. Sometimes, they team up with other bacteria, algae, and protozoa to form “biofilms”–a lump of trouble protected by complex slime that is hard to remove. In humans, Legionella causes both Legionnaire’s disease (pneumonic) and a milder Pontiac fever (non-pneumonic).
Strep throat is from the most common streptococcal bacteria, which is the group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus. There are also other groups of bacteria that can infect the throat that come from groups C and G strep bacteria. Strep throat can make can be given to a person if someone who has strep throat breathes, coughs, or sneezes and the tiny droplets with the strep bacteria go into the air. As the droplets get dispersed in the air they can be breathed in by another person. Strep throat starts within two to five days after someone comes into contact with a person who has the strep infection.
Asymptomatic bacteriueria (ASB) is common within older
However, 3 species out of 14 mentioned above are capable of causing pathogen infections. In fact, with few exceptions, staphylococcus belongs to the facultative anaerobes. More virulent staphylococci produce plasma coagulation. Staphylococcus Aureus plays the mot significant role in human pathology. Its colonies are larger than colonies of Staphylococcus Epidermidis.
CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES Group B Streptococcus (GBS or Streptococcus agalactiae) is an encapsulated gram-positive diplococcus that colonizes the gastrointestinal and genital tracts of pregnant women. GBS colonization is usually asymptomatic. It is beta-hemolytic,
In a world over-run with the dead, it is sometimes hard to be alive and try to survive. For Rick, his everyday life is survival and Rick wanted to help, he wanted to be a hero. The pathogen that was released globally by the government in order to help cure diseases, turned out to turn most humans into flesh-eating monsters. However, Rick was immune to the pathogen. Carl, who is Ricks son, was immune too
Coccidiosis Coccidiosis is a gastrointestinal disease of farm and other domestic animals caused by Eimeria spp (Leite-Browning, 2009). Coccidiosis is easily transmittable since it is a disease aggravated by stress from overcrowding, filthy and wet pens and also by unclean water and thus will spread through a herd like wildfire as stated by Gasparotto (n.d.). It is a disease of young kids and lambs being common to age four weeks to four to six months when kept in unhygienic and overcrowded houses (Avula, Corriveau, de Wolf, Falzon, Fernandez, Guthrie, Jansen, Jones, Kelton, LeBoeuf, Martin, Mederos, Menzies, Peregrine, Shakya, & VanLeeuwen, 2012; Varghese & Yayabu, as cited in Ahmad, I. Khan, M. Khan & Rehman, 2010). Older animals can also be affected if not previously exposed as lambs or kids. Disease in adults is very rare because immunity develops within a month or two after exposure to the coccidia (Avula, et al., 2012).
