On a warm day in New York City in 1911, tragedy struck. It was an incident that would be written up in newspapers across the country; a horrendous incident that would change legislature, labor laws and hundreds of lives forever. This dreadful event left nearly 150 girls and women dead, and became one of the most murderous fires in the history of New York City. The day was March 26, 1911, and the fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory was an historic one.
“In the first six months of 1892 the city experienced nearly eight hundred violent deaths”(12). Catastrophes happened even before the fair technically started, but the with a huge flow of people to help build the fair came a huge amount of crime. In a short time frame, “[in] August alone the building took three lives. Elsewhere on the grounds four other men died and dozens more suffered all manner of fractures, burns, and lacerations”(178). Many people lost their lives.
The Cocoanut Grove, Boston’s most well known nightclub, burns into flames on a Saturday night on November 28, 1942. It was the largest nightclub fire in the United States; one of the most horrific tragedies, that killed 492 people, injured some severely, and traumatized others for the rest
How could such a devastating event have such positive effects? A crucial element of Chicago’s history, the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 can be understood by studying the cause of its severity, its impact on the city, and the recovery efforts of the people. The widespread effects of the fire were caused by adverse weather conditions and the origin of the fire. The months leading up to fire incorporated all the elements necessary for a fire to begin, as a terrible drought plagued the city during the four months prior to the fire: from the months of July to October, less than three inches of rain had fallen (McNamara).
This sparked the White Night Riots and caused an increase in gay people joining the police force. Another hate crime happened more recently. On June 12, 2016, Pulse, a night club in Orlando, Florida, was the site of the deadliest mass shooting in United States history. It left 49 SAGA people dead and 53 people wounded.
During class we saw this film called “The Lemon Grove Incident” it was a film in which made me feel very comfortable. It showed full on racism towards the Latinos in that location, they literally described Mexican people as dirty people with diseases. It was quite fascinating hearing the outrages claims/reasons the white people had for sending the Mexicans kids to a new school “a barn”. I did feel quite proud when the parents of those Mexican children stepped up and arranged gathers to determine that they would not allow such injustice towards their children. Almost close to the end I was smiling the whole time, during the court scene it was quite clear the white people had no knowledgeable excuse towards their actions and decisions other than
The Hindenburg disaster was a tragic event that had occurred in Manchester Township, New Jersey on May 6, 1937. The German passenger airship caught fire and was destroyed during its attempt to dock with its mooring mast at a Naval Air Station. The disaster killed 35 persons on the airship, and one member of the ground crew, but miraculously 62 of the 97 passengers and crew survived. There were many opinions about what exactly sparked the explosion and what caused it to burn so quickly. Tension began between the United States and Germany as people believed the idea that a crewmember or passenger had sabotaged the airship, intentionally starting a fire.
The historical even that I chose, is the Rosewood Massacre. Here is a little background about the Rosewood Massacre. The massacre started as an allegation a white woman, named Fannie Coleman Taylor, was raped by a black man. This led Fannie Taylor’s husband to assemble a bunch of white men to catch who they thought to be the attacker, an alleged escaped convict, Jesse Hunter. Fannie Taylor’s husband, James Taylor, assembled people from a near Ku Klux Klan gathering to come to Rosewood where it was said that he’d been hiding by the help of Samuel Carter.
On Thursday April 15, 2018 two black men walked into a Starbucks in Philadelphia on and sat down to talk. Officials say that they asked to use the bathroom, but because they did not buy anything, an employee refused to let them go into the bathroom. They were eventually asked to leave, and they said no, which led to the cops coming to the coffee shop where they were arrested. What began as an opportunity to talk about real estate at a Philadelphia Starbucks, led to two black men being arrested, which has lately sparked a lot of outraged protests, accusations of racism towards Starbucks, and many more things. This all started with Rashon Nelson and Donte Robinson at a Starbucks.
World War 2. The Holocaust. An occurrence that will never be forgotten in the history of man. Millions of people died from starvation, gas, fire, and bodily harm in the camps the Nazis set up during their campaign to ‘cleanse’ the world of its ‘pollution’. The slaughter of Jews made the Nazis infamous.
The Christmas Catastrophe The President rushed into battle with his plasma cannon, shooting erratically. Hold on, let’s back it up a few days. It all happened so quickly, one minute we were getting ready for Christmas Eve dinner and the next we were handed guns and told to fight. Hundreds of us died fighting.
The Holocaust The Holocaust is one of the more well known events in history, it’s a really bad time to be in but this did happen to these people and for no reason. The Holocaust is when the Nazi’s from Germany attacked the Jews Adolf Hitler led this attack and he and his men wiped out approximately 6,000,000 Jews. The reason for this was Hitler entered Germany into the olympics thinking he would win easily. Well he soon found out that he wasn’t the best and he lost.
but that was it. With the way this place was made, I wasn 't even sure if it was possible to hear anything unless someone was standing directly above me. With a long drawn out sigh and disappointment coursing through my body, I went back into the awful gray room and shut the massive metal door behind me. The sound that door made gave me chills every time and I
