On June 28, 1969, a police raid took place at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, which is in Manhattan, New York. Three drag queens and a lesbian were arrested for no stated reason. The on looking crowd grew violent and it turned into a riot. This was considered a hate crime. It’s known as the Stonewall Riots and it brought the SAGA (LGBTQIA+) community close together and started up pride movements.
On October 7, 1998, another hate crime occurred. Matthew Shepard, an openly gay student in Laramie, Wyoming, was beaten, tied to a fence, and later dies from his severe injuries. This sparked the White Night Riots and caused an increase in gay people joining the police force. Another hate crime happened more recently.
On June 12, 2016, Pulse, a night club in Orlando, Florida, was the site of the deadliest mass shooting in United States history. It left 49 SAGA people dead and 53 people wounded. It’s too recent to discuss its long-term effects, but so far it has terrified the SAGA community and caused many people to be apprehensive about going to pride events. Hate crimes against SAGA people have made SAGA people prouder about themselves, caused laws and bills to be set in place, and have caused more hate and stigma to spread.
Hate crimes against SAGA people have made SAGA people more proud of who they are. More pride movements have been established since the Stonewall Riots to show support for these individuals and to show that their proud of themselves. Pride month (June) celebrates and raises awareness of a different group of SAGA individuals every day. Some examples are the third of this past June was bisexual pride day, and another is the fifteenth of this past June was agender pride day.
