The movie musical; A staple genre in the movie industry. Starting back at the end of the “talkies” era in the late 1920’s, once movies had the capabilities to capture their actor’s actual sound on the screen, there were limitless possibilities. Since then, the movie musical has seemingly grown exponentially over time. Starting back with the golden age classics such as State Fair or Singin’ in the Rain, the masses fell in love with dazzling ladies and dashing men dancing and singing on the big movie screen. It did not deteriorate over time. Beloved musicals such as West Side Story, The Music Man, Mary Poppins and My Fair Lady captured audiences’ hearts. The movie musical was quite simply, brilliant. They allow for the masses to enjoy the joy of musicals, except on the screen, the ability to view it multiple times and at a fraction of the price. However, over the past decade, many have questioned the continuing purpose of these movie musicals. The most recent examples have been the movie adaptations of Les Miserables and Into the Woods. People are beginning to question if producers are sacrificing talent for big named actors to bring in audiences. Quality is a huge controversy that is surrounding the movie musical industry.
