Tom has been actively struggling in his role as a leader. Although a training and development program will likely assist Tom in the future, a more immediate intervention is needed. Therefore, a coaching plan is recommended for Tom, which will make use of Cognitive Behavioral Coaching (CBC) techniques. It is important to note, although CBC makes use of techniques formulated for use in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), coaching is not the same as therapy. Coaching should not be used in any way to diagnose or attempt to treat psychological dysfunction. As a development tool, the MLQ30 will help Tom identify areas for development, but it can also be used to assess changes in his management and leadership style as a result of coaching. The MLQ30 is comprised of 180 items, covering 30 competencies using six statements for each competency (Beazer & Cameron, 2015). The feedback generated from the MLQ30 is extensive (13-page report) and provides information on leadership theory as well as percentile ranks comparing a respondent’s results with a standardized sample. The level of information generated by the MLQ30 will assist Tom in his development as a leader and provide easy comparison after the coaching intervention is concluded. Reliability has been demonstrated to range between .78 and .94 using alpha coefficients and there is strong evidence of construct validity, as well as the suggestion of criterion-related validity (Beazer & Cameron, 2015). Overall, the MLQ30 should provide a solid comparison for Tom from before and after coaching
