The Case Study of Sandra Sandra is a twenty eight year old female who has sought out counseling due to depression. As the counseling session moves forward, Sandra explains an uncle had sexually abused her from ages four to nine. Sandra goes on to tell about her female cousin who she would play doctor with. Later on in life, Sandra experienced two date rapes during her high school years. The sexual abuse Sandra has experienced as a child has made her promiscuous with men. She is now a single parent and trying to better her life for her daughter. Sandra wants to stop drinking and be able to work through her depression and suicidal thoughts. Through counseling Sandra will use the interventions of cognitive reconstructing and preventing revictimization to work through her depression.

Cognitive reconstructing will be used in counseling because of its high efficacy and effectiveness over supportive counseling (Ehlers, Clark, Hackmann, McManus & Fennell, 2005). During counseling Sandra will use cognitive reconstruction to reexamine the meaning of her past traumas (Ehlers et al., 2005). Sandra will examine her childhood cognitive distortions and maladaptive beliefs to understand her feelings of guilt, hopelessness, helplessness, and negative self esteem (Smucker, Dancu, Foa, & Niederee, 1995). Sandra can work through each trauma she has experienced and understand them in a more realistic sense, while giving herself a more positive outlook on herself and her life. By changing her negative beliefs of herself she can begin to see she can be a great mother and deserves healthy
