What is sex trafficking? Sex-Trafficking is defined as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of a person, using the force of threat or other forms of coercion, fraud, or the abuse of power. This includes giving or receiving payments or benefits to create control over another person, such as a prostitute or sex-slave. A key differentiation must be made between Human-Trafficking and Human Smuggling. Human smuggling is an attempt to cross a border illegally, while human trafficking is a form of “Modern Day Slavery”. While there may always be an excuse or reasoning for Human Smuggling, there is never a justifiable reason for Human trafficking.
Sex-Trafficking, Gender-Based violence as well as sexual exploitation are a very taboo topics, people are not being educated how to spot or prevent this abuse, and the few that are educated do not see the importance of their roles in society. Victims of sex trafficking are will rarely speak out about their abuse. They are often afraid to seek justice for themselves because of the fear they may be caught by their abusers or be threatened with blackmail or familial violence. Less than 40% of women will seek help from family or friends and less than 10% will report their abuse to police.
