Genre Description: A historical fiction novel must require the plot to take place during a previous time period and is using a character that is not actually real. “Cold Mountain” by Charles Frazier, fit perfectly into the genre of historical fiction, where the time period is in the 1800’s and the characters are not real people.
Setting: Virginia and North Carolina U.S.A in 1864 during the Civil War. The tone of the story is wistful, because all of the characters are regretful of something in their lives.

Inman abandons the front lines now becoming a deserter to be later on hunted down. During Inman’s journey he is met with danger and violence every path he takes. Inman stops a man named Solomon Veasey from killing his own wife, and then joins Inman on his journey home. The next day, Inman and Veasey assist a man named Junior on getting his dead cow out of the creek. Junior offers Inman and Veasey to supper and later turning them into the Home Guards, the military force that are hunting down deserters. The Home Guards are walking the men back to war, but encounter the Federalist causing them to shoot the deserters. Luckily Inman was only hit with a head wound, Veasey wasn’t as lucky and died. Inman continues on his journey home, along the way he meets an old lady that owns a lot of goats. The goat-woman nurses Inman back to good health while she tells him about her life of isolation. Inman advances on encountering a young women named Sara, she feeds Inman and then kill three Federalist, because they threatened to take her only hog. Inman is back on track towards Cold Mountain, where the next day he reunites with Ada as she is hunting turkeys. Another group of Home Guards found Inman and have a shootout. Inman was able to kill all of them but one named Birch. They then shoot at each other and both are pronounced dead by the time Ada arrived to the
