Are politics deadly? Those two words are scarcely used in the same sentence. Yet the cold war showed the dangers of politics due to differences in ideology and government. The cold war began because of the United States and the Soviet Union’s differences in leadership. Each was threatening the other's government type and threatening their society. But during this war, they didn’t use traditional weapons and warfare. But they used advanced technology such as nuclear bombs, missiles, and astronomic technology. But take my word for it, let's look at some events leading up to and during the cold war.

After World War Two the world was in a fragile state and the military might would be low due to the men just returning from war. But they used three main ways to fight back; these can be defined as alliances, propaganda, and an arms race. During the Cold War propaganda was used by both the United States and the Soviet Union. This can be found in Document Two when President Truman said “The seeds of totalitarian regimes are nurtured by misery and want. They spread and grow in the soil of poverty and strife. They reach their full growth when the hope of a people for a better life has died.” And in document Six, the Soviet’s Premier Khrushchev says “The inspirers of the “cold war” began to establish military blocks—- the North Atlantic bloc, SEATO, and the Baghdad pact. [They claim] they have united for defense against the “communist threat.” But this is sheer hypocrisy! We know from history that when planning a re-division of the world, the imperialist powers have always lined up military blocks.”. Furthermore, they also used alliances to block each other off and defend themselves. These alliances are listed as NATO and Warsaw Pact in Document 5. One last weapon in the arms race, this was a time of building up nuclear weapons and the threat to use them if necessary. But for some, it was a reason to avoid war.
