The UN troops were recoiled and disorder and were defending a line well to the south of Seoul, which is the capital of South Korea. During these times morale was down and was looking so good for South Korea. The new field commander General Ridgway was able to slowly start to push north. By mid-April the allies were finally coming back. The only thing was the Chinese launched their offensive.
After WWII, there was communism fever in the northern part of the world. This domineering outbreak of communism threatened the US and our capitalist allies. Through the outbreaks, the US took things to drastic measures and did everything in their power to stop communism, causing multiple wars and combat. During June of 1950, North Korea first invaded the Southern part of Korea due to their pessimistic views on communism.
The invasion of South Korea marked the first actual military combat of the Cold War, despite the fact that the Cold War started nearly three years sooner.1 Following the invasion, Harry S. Truman and the United Nations rushed into involvement, differing greatly from the peaceful setup of the previously relevant League of Nations. (Document C) In the early stages of the war, more citizens opposed it than supported it, leading to protests and frustration among citizens; however, by the end of the Korean War, significantly more Americans were content with the Korean War than were opposed. (Document D) With help from the United Nations, American and South Korean troops forced North Korean troops backward; and after a short failed attempt to conquer Korea in its entirety, South Korea once again settled for a division at the 38th parallel.
The Korean War was a proxy war fought between the United States and the USSR, for the purpose of gaining power and political influence in other parts of the world. Since the end of WWII, the USSR and the United States became very hostile against one another, creating what came to be called “The Cold War“ coined by Bernard Baruch in 1947 from the lack of there ever being direct battles against one another. From the result of the bitter and cold rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union came a large chain of indirect battling over political influence in developing or war-torn countries. As this feud occurred the people of the United States mainly wanted there to be a change in Korea out of this war [Doc E], but what was occurring
The first major conflict between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War was the Korean War. The United States entered the Korean War after President Harry Truman declared, “The defense of Korea is part of the worldwide effort of all the free nations to maintain freedom. It has shown free men that if they stand together, and pool their strength, Communist aggression cannot succeed.” However, the involvement did not result in any significant changes. North Korea remained communist, and South Korea remained capitalist, just as they were before the war.
The Korean War was one of the first military actions in the Cold War. In the next month, the American military got involved. The American Military got involved because the United States was against the idea of Communism. The Korean War ended July 1953 (history.com). Even today North Korea is having problems.
The aftermath of World War II marked the beginning of a new era in global politics - the Cold War. Following USSR expansion, tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union had risen, with both sides seeking to expand their spheres of influence and prestige. The Cold War was fought primarily through proxy wars, and the rivalry between the two superpowers was characterized by an intense nuclear arms race, a space race, and a struggle over political ideology. In the United States, fears about the spread of communism triggered a policy of diplomatic containment. However, as China fell to communism and the Korean War broke out, diplomatic strategies shifted to military strategies.
This is where the cold war got warmer. On June 25th, 1950 North Korea would invade South Korea and it became clear to the United States that this attack was planned by Moscow. President Truman responded by waging war under the United Nations and did not ask congress for a formal declaration of war. Truman ordered American forces and supplies to help South Korea and the Soviets did the same with North Korea (Koenig, The 1950's and the Cold War 4). So although the United States and Soviet Union both aided different sides in the Korean war they were not technically fighting directly against each other.
On June 25, 1950, members of the Soviet back North Korean Army crossed the 38th parallel, which was put into place following World War II. These attacks were a surprise and unprovoked attack from the Communist back North Koreans. It was so surprising in fact, the North Koreans were able to push the South Korean and their American allies to a small corner of the main peninsula. Once pinned, the United Nations quickly ratified a call for support to the South Koreans from the Northern aggressors. In doing so, Gen. MacArthur attempted a bold move to land behind the North Korean military in his own surprise attack from Japan.
Truman supported the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which occurred in 1949.This was a military alliance of the democratic nations, including the United States, Canada, France, the United Kingdom and eight other countries. The Korean War began as a civil war between North and South Korea. The conflict became international when the U.S.joined to support South Korea. On June 25th, 1950 Truman ordered American troops to enter Korea.
The Korean War was an example of containment, where the U.S. aided South Korea against North Korea. North Korea is communist and had troops in South Korea, which they were ordered to withdraw by the United Nations. After they did not, America sent troops to aid South Korea and started a war. North Korea then got help from China and Russia, other communist powers. The issue with the Korean War was the controversy over the containment policy.
The invasion that started the Korean War was the first real action that was taken during the Cold War, which had been going on for three years by 1950 (“Korean War”). Although it started out as a civil war between North Korea and South Korea, the U.S. quickly joined to fight alongside South Korea in efforts to stop the spread of communism. The Korean War was a turning point in U.S history and in the Cold War. The U.S. had been engaged in the Cold War in order to fight and contain communism and took action for the first time in 1950 at the start of the Korean War. The Korean War was also significant because it continues to be relevant even today.
During the Cold War, the protracted indirect conflict between NATO and the USSR, one of the most important factors in getting the upper hand was control of resources. Without easy access healthy supplies of raw materials, not only would military competition with the other great superpower be hampered, but consumption, the main driving force of the American economy, would be diminished. This was the rationale behind the famous ‘proxy wars’ of the Cold War; wars which were fought not between the superpowers themselves, but between one superpower and the allies of the other. One of the first of these proxy wars, and one of the most devastating for the indigenous people, was the Korean War.
Looking back sixty three years ago on July 27th 1953 marked the armistice signing of the Korean War. Three years prior to the cease fire order there was a vicious war between North Korean and South Korean. Korean was divided by the aftermath of the war. America occupied the South and Russian the North.

Yet, in the 1950s, the U.S. thought it was believed that the only way to stop the spread of communism was to fight back against the potential formation of communist governments. When war broke out in Korea, it became a place for the United States to make a statement against communism on a global front joining with South Korea to combat the communist North.
