I stood before my class, legs knocking together as if the earth were about to open underneath them. I tried to dry my hands, but they skidded off my pants, seemingly of their own mind as I opened my mouth. As I spoke the words I had been rehearsing for days, I was soon enveloped in a cloud of words, protecting me from the anxiety I had felt but moments before. My first experience with theater was much like other children when at 10 years old I auditioned for a role in my elementary school musical, at the age where hearing squeaking of voices onstage is “adorable”, rather than annoying. Therefore, when I was presented with the opportunity to expand the knowledge of the world about the theater, I danced at the opportunity. The goal of my project on the theater (theater being a collective phrase lumping together dramas, comedies, and musicals) is to educate on the importance of theater in the larger society, as well as to inform the inner workings of the theater and why also the role of the theater is highly contested in the world today. The goal of my bringing the argument of theater’s importance to the view of the larger society is additionally to demonstrate the symbiotic relationship the community and the theater have together, and how the identity of the theater has changed throughout the years as a reflection of the changing ideals of essentially “what it means to be a human” in each era of world history.
