I fell in love with the German language about four years ago, when I started taking German language classes my freshman year of high school. I was motivated to take German instead of Spanish or even French because it wasn’t as popular and because I used to read the fairy tales written by the Grimm brothers, who lived in Germany, when I was younger. I absolutely loved them and wanted to have the ability to read the original stories, which are all written in German. I also think the German language is important because Germany is such an important country in the world.
I began to learn German while living in Virginia, but had no idea that I would be leaving after only two years of living there. I did not realize that German was not a common language to have at a high school, so when my parents told me that I would be moving to Vermont I did not even think that there would not be a German program. I started to look at schools and did not find many schools with German. I was nervous that when we did pick a school they would not have a German program. Luckily, we chose Manchester as a home, and Burr Burton Academy as our high school, which has a German language option. Better yet, there is also a German exchange program. I loved hearing about her old life in Germany, and the stories of how school was for her in Germany, and how their schooling now differs from ours. Now I am in Vermont taking my fourth year of German, loving it, and learning that there is a way for me to continue to expand on my horizons of learning German, through more than stories, books and the lessons that we are taught in german class. I will have the chance to experience some of it through the German exchange
