College Admissions Essay: How Art Has Changed My Life

If I had illustrated my life before now, it would have looked much like a M.C. Escher piece. Due to the combination of my poverty-stricken upbringing and my desperate cravings for a fulfilling life, there have been many instances where I felt as though I were the hand that was drawing a hand that was drawing itself. No matter the obstacle or opportunity that lay before me I couldn’t shake the overwhelming feeling of being locked in an inescapable paradox cage or trapped on the ever-ascending stairway that progressed nowhere despite the fact that I have been handed the directions out. However, the single impact of art changed my imprisoned outlook as well as my entire life. Most people like to imagine that art can come from out of nowhere and influence like nothing ever heard, seen, read, or felt before. The greater truth is that everything – every book, every movie, every play, every painting, every song, and every cuisine – comes out of something that both provokes and precedes it. The prospect of being awarded scholarship funds allows me to see that my future is not only available, but it is attainable as well. I may not have all the details of my future planned out in full yet, but I do know I plan to continue the exploration of my passions in art and to achieve a type of involvement and dedication more profound than ever before. I seek to expand and immerse myself in a community that will continue to challenge and support me in all my current and future ambitions. Overall, I want to take advantage of every opportunity given to me, and, through scholarships such as this, I have hope I will be able to just that. If I am blessed with the privilege of attending a university, it will be without a doubt the highest reward and the greatest challenge I will have ever
