Learning to fly Introduction Have you ever had a fusion of emotions wanting to burst out all at the same time? I’m sure everyone has experienced this, at least once; I know I have experienced this multiple times in my life. The first time occurred when I was twelve years old and I discovered that the tooth fairy was not the one who would steal my teeth at night. That was a real struggle. But perhaps the event that left a mark in the most profound part of my heart was leaving Mexico to begin a new chapter of my life. Anxious, frightened, disheartened, and enthusiastic all at once, I packed my bags, said goodbye to childhood dreams, and headed toward new horizons. Coming to the United States has been the hardest decision I have ever encountered. Not only because I separated from my family in Mexico, but also because I had to begin an important stage of my life: college. I should have never doubted my ability of taking this big step. I am proud that I did not quit at the first moment I was offered to, and I am proud that I was strong enough to overcome all the obstacles. I still have obstacles that I have to overcome, and greater obstacles that I will encounter in the future, but I know that I am ready for them. Time to make decisions on my own It was my decision to come to the United States to study. Although I was influenced and supported by my parents, I was completely aware that it was up to me. I had the power to say yes or no, and I knew I had to be responsible of my decision as well. I decided to study in the United States because it was a dream I always had, and also because I realized that I had more opportunities of success. It was a hard decision, because I had to choose between my family and my future.
