Community College is a new beginning for everyone that enrolls. The access to college allows them to broaden their minds, discover their passions, and push themselves forward. Community college opens doors for their students that they would never have believed that they were there before. It gives the students a chance to explore and see what they are truly wanting to do with their lives. Addison writes, “Just follow any one of the 1,655 road signs, and pop your head inside - yes, they let anyone in – and there you will find discoveries of a first independent film, a first independent thought, a first independent study.
I believe I should be accepted into to the University of North Dakota School Of Medicine because of my commitment to practicing primary rural care in the Midwest, my experience working with the underserved populations of my community, and my desire to advance medicine through research. Growing up in a small rural community, I was fortunate to have the same primary care physician. However, recently our town has experienced difficulty in hiring and retaining physicians. My enjoyment of my rural community inspires me to someday become a physician in this type of community. My commitment to serving the underserved population of my community is demonstrated through volunteering for 5 years at a clinic for the uninsured.
My geographic narrative isn’t your typical Texas A&M student story, 2 years ago I moved to College Station from my home in Salinas, California but once you read my story you’ll realize that move isn’t as random as it seems. My mom grew up in San Antonio Texas, but lived in several different places in her younger years because her father was an Air Force Kernel. She attended Texas A&M University in College Station and was a part of the graduating class of 1980. After college my mom moved by herself to Los Angeles, California and after a couple years met my father there. My dad is a third generation Californian, with his grandparents settling by the Sacramento River in northern California and his father and mother settling in Los Angles where
I knew once I stepped through those doors that was home for me. Two weeks later I transferred and started January 4, 2016 the first day back from Christmas break. I was ecstatic, happy, and nervous, but I knew I made the right choice and every day after that has been fantastic. I played sports every season, I joined clubs, and most importantly found happiness. I am into to my senior year and it is flying by like a cheetah on skies.
It was across the country as required a parent’s sign off since I wasn’t eighteen. A signature my mother wasn’t willing to provide. Instead of going to another four year college, I decided to go to a local community college. I hadn’t considered what this would mean for my future, that I would be living with people who not only weren’t my family, but had no responsibility or commitment to keep me in their house hold. I didn’t even consider what it would mean for my educational future, like the fact that half of the college I was accepted to would be transferable to through the community college I chose to attend.
Today, North Carolina 's eastern counties continue to lack the modern transportation infrastructure needed to improve safety, maintain quality of life and support economic progress required in the 21st century. There are 32 counties east of Interstate I-95. If we do not consider Interstate I-40, 28 of these coastal counties, which represent a total population of nearly 1.3 million according to 2010 US Census data, have no interstate access whatsoever even though North Carolina currently maintains over 1300 miles of interstate routes through the rest of the state. This despite its residents that paid taxes directly and indirectly into a system for more than 5 decades.
In the United States a community college is defined as a nonresidential junior college offering courses to people living in a particular area. They are post secondary schools and are also referred to as junior colleges, vocational or technical schools because generally the course of study is for two years. The student can earn an associates degree or certification and/or continue their education by transfering to a four year college to complete their educational pursuits and earn a Bachelor 's degree. Community colleges started in the late 1800’s and have grown and evolved over the years. Today many four year colleges and universities have become so expensive to attend that many prospective students are opting for the more affordable alternative of a community college for their first two years of study where they can save money by living at home and taking classes that will transfer to a four year institution, however, there are students that cannot afford the lower cost of community colleges.
When I learned of my acceptance to Rutgers University, I was initially filled with both excitement and anxiety. Though the opportunities were plentiful at this prestigious University, I was worried that the I would let them slip by. The first two years I was here, I did not exactly thrive. I was unsure of what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and the route that I was taking (exercise science) did not seem to be the right choice. My sister, who had graduated from Rutgers in 2014, suggested public health, as it was less science-intensive and had similar career opportunities.
Unfortunately these difficult times are reflective upon my first attempt at community college. After moving across the country and taking a three year break from pursuing my education, I enrolled at Community College of Philadelphia and have started a much better trend in my education. I am very passionate about pursuing my educational
I immigrated to the United States with my family in early 2014. We were not familiar to the surroundings, and had to stay close to relatives. Attending a community college was my only option to get quality education without creating any educational gaps. While attending Northern Virginia Community College in Woodbridge, VA, I discovered the guaranteed admission agreement between my college and the University of Virginia. I always dreamed of attending a university that would be well known for its strong academic background and its successful alumni.
As I transitioned into college, I witnessed this transformation first hand — I transitioned from the urban setting
I never dreamed of me moving around from place to place. Moving from state to state, city to city, house to house, and school to school is a challenge in itself. Big changes are not common for most people, but for me, it’s normal. The ability for me to adapt to change is incredible.
But, I am very well aware that life and plans don’t always work well together. I thought when coming to college I was going to be able to go home to my dogs and my job and my dad. But, now that is not a reality. College has changed my home life greatly. The biggest stressors I have faced since coming to college are hand in hand with those in my general life.
I will soon be leaving my home to go away to college. The last two years I have attended a community college and was able to stay at home. However now it is time to move on and attend a university to finish my bachelor's degree. Though it will be hard to move from my home and my family, I will think of my future instead of looking back, because I know that I will have more opportunities at the school I have chosen. One day I do plan on coming back home to start a life near my family, but I will not look back until I plan to come
