Pursuing A Degree In Community Based Education At Temple University

I have intentions of completing the Human Development and Community Engagement with a concentration in Community Based Education at Temple University not only because I greatly utilized community based education as a low income child, but also because I consider myself a community based educator by being a childcare provider. Now, as childcare provider, I have experienced many different parenting styles and it has caused me to reflect upon my own upbringing.
Growing up in a low income and dysfunctional household, I would utilize any opportunity to get myself out of the home. This would often involve programs at my local library, recreation and community centers. These programs were a crucial part in my upbring by being able to be in a safe and positive learning environment instead of at home or in the neighborhood, I was able to build the tools to rise above my economic class and …show more content…

My parents had both fallen victim to the opioid epidemic, and living with active addiction has an effect on everyone involved. I needed a way to get out of that environment. I made the decision to graduate high school a year early, so school work filled most of my available time and kept me out of the house. I graduated high school at the age of sixteen, went on to community college and lived independently, hundreds of miles from home. It was the utilization of the life skills and tools that the community programs of my youth, that helped me persevere through these difficult times while developing grit. Unfortunately these difficult times are reflective upon my first attempt at community college. After moving across the country and taking a three year break from pursuing my education, I enrolled at Community College of Philadelphia and have started a much better trend in my education.
