Misjudged Community College Community college has been very misjudged throughout the years. I never knew how beneficial for a high school student to start off a community college can be. Sadly, I was raised with a different knowledge about it. “University is a better degree, you will not waste any time,” my parents said. They said that I would be misguided at a community college and that I would be wasting my time. I thought otherwise because I actually experienced being a student at East Los Angeles Community College. Community college is a great transition for students that come from high school and for those who are still not prepared to go to university or who are unsure of what it is that they want to study. Students that go to community college should also not be considered as getting less education than a student at a university, it is easier for students to go to community college because of the easy transition, cheaper school, and more resources. The community college doors were opened to me by my EOP (Educational Opportunity Program) counselor in high school. I was truly blessed with this grand opportunity thanks to her help. My counselor knew that my family was very low income, so going to a university was going to just put me in debt. Especially if I went without knowing what was going on and not knowing what I wanted to study for. That is where I took my college classes when I was still in high school. That school had offered a free school year opportunity for those students that enrolled. I looked into it to see if it was just that community college and turns out many schools local to one’s home give the first school year free. That was a plus for me! The school was local to me so I would spend a dollar on the bus instead of wasting my money being at a university living in dorms, money on food, and gas. University would have drained me out of
