Community College Reputation Essay

It is unfortunate that community colleges have such a bad reputation in the eyes of young adults. Many of my peers have criticized our local Community College, Illinois Central College (ICC). So many young adults that attend 4-year institutions as freshman feel that they are superior than those that attend community colleges. I am here to tell you that those students are wrong. Illinois Central College has prepared me for Bradley University in many ways. The classes at ICC tend to be very small, usually between 20 and 25 students. The individual attention that students receive at a community college is typically far greater than most students receive at a 4-year university, especially in general education courses. All of ICC’s courses are taught by a professor instead of a teacher’s assistant. It is not uncommon for a teacher’s assistant at a 4-year universities to teach an entire course. The professors at ICC care a lot about the students and their performance in the classroom. Several of these characteristics that are at ICC will be at Bradley University. While attending ICC, I was still able to work at my current job. I currently work at Merrill Lynch as a Client Associate and help manage our teams high net worth client relationships. I was only able to keep my job because ICC was close and I allowed me adjust my schedule accordingly. Keeping my job at Merrill Lynch has been crucial to my future goals because I am pursuing a degree in finance. Continuing to live with my parents has been very important to me. Family is a big part of my life and I know that it would have been hard going straight to a 4-year institution right out of high school. ICC has allowed me to stay with my family and keep my job remarkable job at Merrill
