Being able to play a sport in college is a gift that not many people receive, it takes hard work and dedication, a thing that has not changed since the first games were played. Over the years college athletics has grown, since the inception of the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) in 1906. The number of sports now allowed in the NCAA is twenty four and the number of schools who support each sport has grown by the thousands. College athletes compared today from fifty years ago have changed drastically because of how long they stay in college, wanting to be paid, and the different recruiting process.
What is the difference between four years and a year the obvious answer is three years, but for a college athlete that could mean the make or break of your career. The recruiting process for a high school athlete in 1985 would only receive letters from colleges the start of their junior year, not allowed to have actual contact with coaches until then. This was harder on some athletes that could play in college but did not get the exposer needed. Consequently the number of college athletes were not high with a lot of the players missing the opportunity to play. Today a lot more athletes have the chance to be able to play college sports, with the technology it allows for more visibility of stats and easier access to videos giving more opportunities for athletes to gain exposure with colleges. The rules of recruiting has slightly changed no longer having to wait till your junior year to receive letters and contact from coaches.
