Cancer is a disease that causes uncontrolled production and diffusion of irregular cells within an organism. Brain cancer is among the top twenty most common forms of cancer diagnosed in the US and is the second leading cause of cancer deaths among children and young adults. This cancer can be aggressive spreading to the spinal cord and rest of nervous system. There are 120 different known types of brain tumors and each has unique characteristics. The brain is a very captivating organ and its capabilities are astonishing.

William Williams Keen was the first neurosurgeon in the United States. He graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1862 and worked under the U.S. Army during the American Civil War (Mitchell). Keen’s most recognizable occurred in 1888 the first successful removal of a brain tumor. Furthermore, Keen was also involved in the delicate operation which he performed on the jaw of President Grover Cleveland which was considered a significant feat at the time in the medical arts.
The brain contains several two major sections that has different jobs. The sections work together and make it possible for everyday function. The cerebrum is the largest part of the human brain. Its job is associated with higher brain function such as reasoning, visual processing and memory. The cerebellum is often called, ‘little brain’. It is similar to the cerebrum is appearance and structure. However, the cerebellum is involved with regulation and coordination.
Anatomy and physiology of the human and animals has always truly intrigued me particularly the encephalon, the brain. It is truly incredible that one organ that only weighs about 3lbs controls and regulates all other organs in the body. I am so greatly inspired by the work ethic and knowledge of doctors and surgeons. My dream is to be a veterinarian. A very academic-heavy, treacherous road lies ahead of me.
