College is The American Dream Lynn Pasquerella, president of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, expressed her opinion about colleges through an article called “The American Dream and Higher Education's Broader Purpose. Her sole purpose for her writing was to call attention towards colleges and the American dream. The American dream of higher education was mostly appointed just towards finishing school and has always been the same as time goes on, people know at the end of the day what the purpose of college is and what can be accomplished if college is finished. To prove this point she went on to quoting Mark Twain “Training is everything. The peach was once a bitter almond; cauliflower is nothing but cabbage with a college education.” By this Lynn quoted Mark Twain for the purpose of showing that college educations are something so small, but can be the difference between something important and everything else. “Original concept of the “American Dream” was grounded in an idealist vision “of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.” The quote demonstrates the fact that college is seen as something important but not something if went untouched catastrophic to your life. “American Dream has taken a decidedly more materialistic turn in recent years, higher education has consistently been ideologically linked to its fulfillment, whether in its capacity to serve as a catalyst for economic success and social mobility, in its ability to convey the values upon which our society rests, or in its preservation of democratic vitality through an educated citizenry.” College education is seen as very important by many, they feel as if their life depends on it as well as one of the only ways for you to succeed in a job or life in general. “Philosopher Mark Kingwell points out, “When it comes to valuing education, no rating system or outcomes table can actually penetrate the mystery of why learning is good.” Learning may be seen as boring or sometimes not important, but there is a true purpose and will help in the future. School can be seen as monotonous and although there is nothing to truly say what college will do, there is always the broad knowledge that it can help them to accomplish their goals. “Kingwell says, “Irony of this kind is the opposite of ideology, that bastion of catastrophic fixed meanings. As such, it is a virtue of the democratic imagination, an invitation to think differently, opt out, depart from imposing narratives, be a happiness delinquent.” Higher education can be seen as something bad as well sometimes, but in the end has a good purpose. He tells the people what school can be described as, he also goes on to tell the reader to continue to be happy. ”Kingwell concludes, “And that’s what education is for, finally. Ironically, you can pay for the opportunity, but you can’t put a price on the outcome.” No matter what is said about college in the end, the purpose is to help you. He is saying that the things that come after finishing college are indescribable and endless. Perspectives may change about the American dream and higher education, but in the end
