For decades, students have been told that college is the next step after high school graduation. Society glorifies those that have a degree and looks down upon those who do not. Many students have not acquired the necessary tools nor have the motivation to be successful and face problems while pursuing post-high school education. Some argue that college provides a foundation in liberal studies that will improve career opportunities. Charles Murray disagrees in his essay, "Are Too Many People Going to College." He states, "Most people should be getting the basics of a liberal education. But for most students, the place to provide those basics are elementary and middle school." His name is Daryl Partin, and he attended Middle Tennessee State University in the 1980s. I asked, "Would you recommend attending a community college over a university?" He responded, "Yes. Many times, young adults who attend a four-year degreed school wind up changing their major early in their college experience only after having been placed in classes for that major. Attending a community college and concentrating on the basic curriculum gives the student time to determine what they really want to do in life." (Partin) I agree that a community college allows a student gain a grasp on the basics of a major before delving into the upper level classes. Trade schools allow students to focus on a specific area and accomplishment takes less time, which allows a person to enter the workforce earlier.
