Hello Graduating Seniors, Imagine you are Katie in this situation. Katie Johnson is a graduating high school senior just like all of you. However, throughout her life she has had to give up some of the luxuries you all have on a day to day basis. Katie has had to give these up because her mom simply cannot afford them. Why you ask? Her mom never went to college so she scrapes by with her job at the local grocery store. Graduating high school seniors are faced with this same decision each year. Whether college is worth their investment or not. Most other seniors along with all of you will sit at home and weigh the pros and cons of attending college. It is wise because you know it will have the highest income. If you haven't learned by now, money is the base to most things as an adult. If a high school and college graduate were both running to be an assistant, the chances are more likely the college graduate will be chosen and paid more even though the job was not particularly considered a college level job. In some situations a college degree can be more helpful than most of you may think; it also can really put the non-college graduates at a disadvantage: “employers will pay a larger salary for college graduates even in jobs that are not typically considered college level positions.” (Marklein) Going to college and working hard to earn a degree will carry through a lifetime. It is a reliable path due to situations mentioned. With more high school seniors not going to college, the few who did go and get a degree will be more rare and in demand. Thus part of the reason that they will be paid more in any given job. The other reason is because college graduates are stereotyped as being more mature, having better social skills and obviously more educated than high school graduates. At such a young age you are faced with this decision that decides how your future will plan out. With given information you have to decide whether the temporary college debt is worth the outcome. As mentioned, there are many pros to getting a college education. Most high school students would be very attracted to a higher salary that allows for luxuries that non-college graduates may not be able to afford. Along with the many benefits that could be very helpful in the future. It may even end up costing you less to earn a college degree versus sticking with a high school diploma. Katie being a very bright young woman decided she did not want to be under the stress of pinching pennies like her mom. While debt does not thrill Katie, she knows it is what she's willing to take on in order to live a comfortable life in the future. She will go pursue a degree to get her job earning double what her mother makes. Katie knows this degree will guarantee she will no longer have to give up her luxuries as long as she works hard for a degree.
