On April 20, 1999, the unimaginable occurred at Columbine High School in the small town of Littleton, Colorado. A school shooting, carried out by, then senior students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold took the entire community by storm. With 15 deaths, including the perpetrators, and 24 non-fatal injuries, the memories of this horrific massacre will forever resonate in the minds of all. With a meticulously thought out plan, the two shooters prepared guns and bombs in order to perform the sickening act. Families, the FBI, local officials, psychologists, and more spent a multitude of time trying to figure out the reasoning as to what motivated the two boys to kill and cause so much pain to others.
Columbine, by Dave Cullen is a non-fiction book documenting the horrific massacre which took place in Littleton, Colorado on April 20, 1999. Not only does the writer give great detail about the shooting itself, he also gives and in depth look into the lives of the killers, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, and their victims. The focus of this book is for the author to attempt to bring to light what really happened and hopefully gain better understanding as to why it all took place. Cullen, a journalist, begins an extensive nine year research in order to achieve awareness of the happenings before, during and after this tragic event. Entries from the perpetrators personal journals, stories from the ones who witnessed the shootings first hand, countless interviews from the victim’s families, as well as multiple other pieces of information give the reader an extremely up close and personal surrounding Columbine.
The author’s tone in this quote is violent and bitter. Eric saying that he “hated almost everyone “, would support the reader’s thinking towards what kind of person Eric is, and what Eric is thinking. Eric’s use of language almost immediately gives the reader a hint of what he is capable of, not in the sense that he would literally “rip is head off and eat it” but in the sense that he is capable of doing bad things. Given the fact that people throughout the United States have already heard of the mass shooting in Columbine, the reader would promptly identify Eric as the killer and they would be right. The author’s purpose could be to keep the reader thinking: who is the killer? , but also help the reader predict how will the killer’s next plans
Chapters 1-19 In chapter one at Columbine High School, the principal Frank DeAngelis, tells all of his students to be careful, not only because it is a weekend but also because it is prom weekend. Everyone knows that the weekend of prom can be fun but yet dangerous at the same time. In chapter two, Eric Harris, which is a very important person at this school, and in the book, usually had no problems at all getting dates, but this time said otherwise. Eric Harris was a teen psychopath that did not have plans for the future except his plans for the massacre. Dick Hickock was also a psychopath that had a criminal record, which consisted of writing bad checks and petty theft. Even though she does not have any of the background or credentials to write about the shooting itself, Kacey is the most qualified person to tell her own story. Kacey Ruegsegger Johnson and Karen Booker Schelhaas’s thesis throughout this book was that physical, mental, and emotional suffering can be overcome through a lot of hard work, courage and resilience to build a life, a family, and a loving home. The book followed through with this thesis by showing how Kacey’s courage and resilience helped her overcome her personal struggles and difficulties of her teenage years, to come out of it better than ever and helping her build the strength to share her story and use it for good, as well as continuing on to build a loving family in her adult life. One example of this is when Kacey overcame her mental struggles after so many of her friends passed away, she recovered from her deep depression and suicidal ideation through perseverance and faith. With the help and the support of her family and her church, Kacey recovered and learned from her struggles.
The author handles suspense well, making the reader anticipate what will happen next. She spends a couple of chapters writing about the dilemma at the courthouse involving the colored men from The Bottom and The White League gradually leads up to the horrific Colfax massacre. The massacre is described in great detail. The reader is transported into the civil war era and can practically hear the gunshots being fired, can see the men being killed in cold blood leaving their lifeless bodies on the ground in the aftermath. When Israel Smith cheats death again after being brutally beaten and shot in the eye the reader doesn 't know if he will live or die.
