Christopher columbus is worthy for a national holiday because he brought new crops and horses to america. He is worthy because he brought crops from europe and horses from europe. He brought rice,apples oranges,bananas and coffee. If he didn 't bring crops there might not of been enough food. Also they would not have been able to get food as fast.
I believe that Columbus is a hero since he kinda figured about America. I believe that he figured our America since if he never sailed there no one wouldn't had known that America existed. Even when Columbus did figure about America he did hold some people as hostage to explore the area i think he just did that since he probably didn’t feel safe around that
I agree that his accidental discovery ultimately led to the massacre of countless Natives. Although, he might be considered a hero for 'discovering ' the New World. However, there were several who came before him and inhabited the land, such as the Natives. Thus, the impossibility of discovering something that had already been in place. For this reason, I would not consider Columbus a hero.
Furthermore, Christopher Columbus was a very greedy man that only wanted to be rich and famous. He later got arrested for his greed and immorality and taken back to Spain. Christopher Columbus day is insulting to many American Indians and many native-born Americans. Many Americans oppose Christopher Columbus day. Columbus’ expeditions set in motion the worldwide transfer of people, plants, animals, diseases, and cultures that greatly affected nearly every society on the planet.
To many, Christopher Columbus was a very remarkable man of history. His many discoveries and conquests, despite all the hardships faced, have led others to believe that he is some sort of hero. But is that really what he is? A hero? In A people’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn, he states, “To emphasize the heroism of Columbus and his successors as navigators and discoverers, and to deemphasize their genocide, is not a technical necessity, but an ideological choice”.

Bartolome de las Casas is used by Zinn for many of the sources of the cruelty against the natives, but even Zinn admits that "his figures are exaggerations"(). However, Zinn still puts Bartolome under much less criticism than Columbus even though the priest did his share in being cruel to natives; this was most likely because he wanted to make the point that Columbus should not be so heroized. Overall, the monarchy of Europe is truly to blame for sending the greediest men with orders only to extract wealth from the New World. The day Christopher Columbus step foot in the Americas, he began to manipulate the natives he saw. While they saw him as a potential friend, Columbus saw them as fine slaves that could lead him to what he really wanted － gold. Another horrible thing he did was force them into slavery. 3 million native americans perished through the torture along with war. Last he took their land and turned it into colonies. So Columbus basically took the indians land and ran them all the back to the west side of the country. Also the war killed 3 million population which was about 7% of their whole population and he could’ve handle meeting
