The 1920’s in America is often considered as “The Roaring Twenties. World War I was over, women got suffrage, fashion changed immensely, prohibition was put into place, and jazz filled the air. The Roaring ‘20s was a decade of play and prosperity. Unemployment was low and Americans were better off financially. After World War I, America wanted to return to normal.

Coming of age can be described as the time in one's life when one matures emotionally, physically, and mentally. This usually happens in the teenage years of one's life. There is often a time in someone's life when they begin to come of age. This can mean a variety of things depending on the person and their community. When someone starts to come of age, they’re beginning to mature and are being seen more as an adult by those surrounding them. Whether this be simply gaining a new understanding or achievement, it changes them. The conflict of the story and the coming of age moment revolves around what Sammy focused on when he saw them; until, he resolves to stand up for them. Araby on the other hand focuses on an unnamed narrator who is enamored with Magellan's sister and decides to go to Araby, a Dublin Bazaar, in order to get something for her.

Prior to start of the 1900’s there was many discussion on consent especially amongst young teenage girls. The argument can be traced back to the late 19th century. It wasn’t until a debate was sparked do to a law set in 1891 which was on whether the law had violated the British government. It was when the native Indians had set the age of consent lower than what British people wanted it to be. This sparked much debate because in the earlier times people were more afraid of change or challenging it.

Although everyone has growing-up moments, they’re different for everyone. Everyone has different experiences and that’s what makes them grow up differently.
